About Me
“Hello! My name is Mrs. Dethloff, and I’m excited to welcome you to 3rd and 5th grade Social Studies this year. This is my 5th year teaching at Pettus ISD. I have been in private education and early childhood education for 20 years, and I love helping children discover the joys of school! I am married to my high school sweetheart for 33 years and we have six children and 15 grandbabies together. In my spare time I love to read and journal. My favorite thing ever is putting stickers on paper! I also love junking and antiquing with my husband and giving things we find new homes.

Classroom Information
Curriculum used is Texas Studies Weekly
Pettus Elementary Grading Policy
Grades will be in two catagories:
Major Tests/Projects: 60% of grade
- Minimum of three major grades per each 9 weeks grading period
- If a student fails a major assignment, the student will be allowed one attempt to redo the assignment, with the highest grade possible being a 70.
Daily Work: 40% of grade
- Minimun of fifteeen daily assignments per each 9 weeks grading period
- Minimum of 2 grades per week
Missing Assignments ansd Tests:
- Missing assignments and missing tests will be marked with an “M” in Ascender, which means a zero will be assigned.
- After 5 days, if the assignment or test is still missing, the grade becomes a permanent zer, and is not eligible for make-up.

We use Studies Weekly as a curricullum in 3rd and 5th grade.
Third grade students will……
History
- Describe how individuals, events and ideas have changed communities, past and present
- Identify key historical figures who have shaped communites
Geography
- Describe variations inthe physical enviroment, such as climate and lanf=dforms
- Use cardinal and intermediate directions, scales, and symbols to locate places and interpret maps
Economics
- Understand concepts of earning, spending, saving, and donating money
- Explain the free market system, how supply and demand influences prices, and the inpact of government regulations and taxes
Goverment and Citizenship
- Describe the basic structure of government from local to national levels
- Explore actions and decisions thatindividuals and groups can make to improve the community
Culture
- Explain the significance of ethnic and culteral celebrations in various communities and compare them
- Recognize scrientists and inventors who have made significant breakthroughs or innovations affecting communites

- Explain reasons for and the role of key individuals in the colonization of Noth America
- Analyze causes and effects of events prior to and during the American revolution, identify Founding Fathers and Patriot heroes, and summarize outcomes
- Identify contributions to the creation of the US Constitution
- Describe political, economic, and social changes, including causes and effects of major events like War of 1812 and the expansion of slavery
- Explain significance and analyze various issues and events, identifying important individuals and groups during the 20th and 21st Century in the US
Geography
- Describe political and economic regions, locate important political features, and create maps of physical features
- Identify settlement patterns and explain influencing factors
- Descibe adaptions and analyze consequences
Enonomics
- Explain economic patterns of early societies and identify major industries of colonial America
- Identify development and characteristics of the free enterprise system, giving examples of its benefits
- Explain how supply and demand affect consumers and evaluate their effects on industry and agriculture
Government and Citizenship
- Compare systems of government in early European colonies and explain important ideas in foundational documents
- Explain individuals’ duty to particpate in civic affairs at various levels
- Identify past and present national leaders and describe fundamental rights guranteed in the Bill of Rights
Culture
- Identify significant examples of art, music, and literature from various periods and explain
- Describe customs, traditions, and constributions of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups
